TOPCon solar panels

Topcon solar panels are solar panels that use TOPCon solar cell technology. TOPCon stands for tunnel oxide passivated contact, which is a type of solar cell technology that improves the efficiency and performance of PERC (passivated emitter rear contact) solar cells. TOPCon solar cells have a tunneling oxide layer on the back of the cells, which reduces recombination losses and increases the passivation quality. TOPCon solar cells can achieve higher efficiencies than PERC solar cells, reaching up to 25.5% in laboratory tests.

TOPCon solar cell technology was first introduced by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems in Germany in 2013, and has been adopted by several major solar panel manufacturers, such as JinkoSolar, Trina Solar, LONGi Solar, and Suntech, Joyvoit. TOPCon solar panels are suitable for residential and commercial applications that require high power output and reliability. TOPCon solar panels also have a high bifaciality rate, which means they can harvest more energy from the rear side when exposed to reflected light.

There are two kinds of TOPCon solar panels: one is with a black back sheet, and the other is with a transparent back sheet.

According to our experience and test, the transparent backsheet of the topcorn solar panels can increase the efficiency of the modules by allowing more light to pass through and reach the solar cells. The transparent backsheet also reduces the weight and thickness of the modules, making them easier to install and transport. The transparent backsheet also has anti-aging and anti-corrosion properties, which can improve the reliability and durability of the modules.

However, the transparent backsheet also has some disadvantages compared to the black backsheet. The transparent backsheet may have lower thermal insulation and higher operating temperature, which can affect the performance and lifespan of the modules. The transparent backsheet may also have lower fire resistance and higher flammability, which can pose safety risks in case of fire1. The transparent backsheet may also have higher cost than the black backsheet due to the use of more expensive materials.

Therefore, whether the transparent backsheet can increase the efficiency of the topcorn solar panels depends on several factors, such as the environmental conditions, the installation method, the module design, and the cost-benefit analysis. It is not a simple yes or no answer, but rather a trade-off between different advantages and disadvantages.

Some possible factors that may affect the suitability of these panels are:

The amount of sunlight and reflected light in the region, which can determine the energy output and performance of the panels. Transparent TOPCon solar panels have a high bifaciality factor, which means they can harvest more energy from the rear side when exposed to reflected light from the ground or other surfaces.

The environmental conditions and weather patterns in the region, which can affect the reliability and durability of the panels. Transparent TOPCon solar panels have anti-aging and anti-corrosion properties, which can protect them from harsh conditions such as high humidity, salt spray, dust, etc. However, they may have lower thermal insulation and higher operating temperature, which can reduce their efficiency and lifespan in hot climates. They may also have lower fire resistance and higher flammability, which can pose safety risks in case of fire.

The installation method and design preferences in the region, which can affect the cost and aesthetics of the panels. Transparent TOPCon solar panels have lower weight and thickness than dual glass panels, which can make them easier to install and transport. They are also available in different colors and levels of transparency, which can be adapted to modern architectural concepts. However, they may also have higher cost than black backsheet panels due to the use of more expensive materials.

Therefore, some possible countries that may be suitable for transparent TOPCon solar panels are:

Countries with high solar irradiation and high albedo (reflectivity) of the ground or other surfaces, such as desert regions or snowy regions. These countries can benefit from the high bifaciality factor and high power output of the transparent TOPCon solar panels.

Countries with mild to moderate climates and low fire risk, such as coastal regions or temperate regions. These countries can avoid the potential drawbacks of the transparent TOPCon solar panels related to high temperature and low fire resistance.

Countries with advanced solar markets and high demand for BIPV (building-integrated photovoltaics) or agrivoltaics (solar farming), such as European countries or Asian countries. These countries can appreciate the innovative design and aesthetic appeal of the transparent TOPCon solar panels.
